deBridge’s Open-Source Approach: Overview and details
deBridge has decided to operate under the Business Source License (BSL) 1.1. Read on to understand the rationale behind it.
deBridge is based on open-source software that makes use of smart contracts across various blockchain networks. Similar to many decentralized blockchain networks that are voted on by platform users, the deBridge governance will be governed by holders of the DBR tokens.
deBridge operates under the Business Source License (BSL) 1.1. This agreement incorporates copyright law and allows deBridge governance to restrict unauthorized commercialization of an entity’s source code until the end of 2025. During that time, the deBridge community will be the first to build out an ecosystem around the deBridge core codebase.
Why BSL 1.1?
While other licenses such as MIT, Apache and GPL exist, the BSL 1.1 provides a way to maintain the code while restricting unauthorized usage. The BSL 1.1 has no impact on deBridge integrations, but it prohibits other protocols from using the code in a commercial or production context until the end of 2025. deBridge protocol is bootstrapped by the foundation that will gradually pass control over the protocol to governance. This is expected to happen in the near future and BSL license will help to avoid forks and vampire attacks on the protocol during the bootstrapping phase before governance takes over control of the protocol.
After BSL ceases, the license will be automatically converted to a GPL, indefinitely. In case governance takes over control earlier, upon the voting the “Change date” can be set earlier. Users may be aware that another popular project in the space, Uniswap, initially used to be licensed under GPL, which led to copycat copies of the software drawing users away from Uniswap. By using a modified license agreement, Uniswap V3 tries to combat these potential copycat vampire attacks.
